Sorry if you visited here recently and found it bereft of anything new. I've been locked in a life-or-death battle with Substack. Specifically, since April, I've been keeping up with revisions to two major works (Can't You Wait Until I'm Dead? and Murder of an Uncommon Man), posting chapters of The Transformation of Jennie Heckenlaible for keen friends, and continuing a series of essays that began in 2015 (under the heading of On Reflection).

But somewhere in the past four decades, it’s turned into a gnarly, twisted movement aimed at destroying natural-born women and tearing apart their Godgiven counterparts. It’s become a dark, maniacal, diabolical movement to destroy our sons, brothers, fathers, husbands, cousins, uncles and neighbors. About me

  I'm a trans writer and avid reader of queer stories based in Vancouver, Canada. My other passions include 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy, volunteering, swimming, and cycling.  Like many trans writers, I didn’t start here. I studied creative writing for my undergraduate degree and then wrote as a scientist. In 2019, I wrote a fictionalized novella about my father’s death called Murder of an Uncommon Man . In 2022, I worked with the narrator Lia DiFonzo to create the accompanying audiobook. My first magazine article on transitioning, “ Small Town Girl ,” appeared in Pride Magazine for Vancouver Pride Society. When the CBC interviewed me about transitioning and pronouns, I discovered that I’m equally comfortable with she/they and the names Allison and A.M. Find my ongoing overshare on Bluesky @amkirsch.com  and Substack . Murder of an Uncommon Man

An unexpected call from Riverton, Manitoba, in 2007 forced Janet Berg to confront her father Daniel's life and death. A farmer found him dead in a field with a shotgun, and the forty-year-old scientist needed to explain why. From her home in Seattle, half a continent away, she sifted through musty boxes and her memories to piece together what happened to Daniel during his last twelve years of estrangement.
